Of all of the athletes we’ve had the pleasure of joining on these shopping trips, Victor Martinez’s is probably one of the most extensive.
The MHP athlete and IFBB Pro visits multiple grocery stores multiple times per week to get everything he needs to fuels his body.
The main reason is he likes to buy certain things at certain stores, whether it be due to taste, texture, or cost.
In this video, Join Victor as he visits Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and ACME for his grocery run.
The first stop on Victor’s grocery trip is Trader Joes. Here, he purchases the majority of his fruits.
He likes the fact that TJ’s offers organic products at a reasonable price point. The fruits he picks up here are bananas, gala apples, avocados, pears, peaches, and pre-cut mangos.
Other food sources he purchases at whole foods include russet potatoes, strawberries, and eggs.
On average, during a week - Victor estimates that he spends $300-400 on food.
The next market Victor takes us to is Whole Foods. Immediately after walking in, he’s drawn to the grapes. He loves the texture of the organic grapes at Whole Foods, so much so that he doesn’t mind shelling out the extra cash.
Also, paying homage to his Dominican roots, he snags a couple plantains. Next, he adds some white sweet potatoes to his cart. Whole Foods is the only place he’s been able to find them.
Whole Foods is also where he purchases most of his protein sources. This includes Atlantic salmon, New York strip steak, and chicken breast. And for alternative carb sources to his fruit and potatoes, he gets long grain rice and Irish oatmeal.
The final stop is where Victor gets what he calls his “artificial stuff”.
The products he buys here are Pam olive oil spray, Social Tea biscuits, Gatorade, and Diet Coke.
He uses the Gatorade after his workouts as a carb source to rehydrate and replenish glycogen after his long training sessions.
