What are the ideal proportions for the male physique? Is there such thing as "ideal" proportions? Bodybuilding legend Steve "Hercules" Reeves (pictured right) thought so. In his book Building The Classic Physique The Natural Way, Steve wrote about his ideal muscle to bone ratios. These ratios were used to work out your ideal shape based on some of your body measurements.
This calculator is based on the formula Steve created. In order to calculate your "ideal" body measurements you'll need:
- Wrist site
- Ankle size
- Head size (measure around at forehead height)
- Pelvis size (the widest part of your pelvis)
- Knee size
You can get these measurements from using a tape measure to measure each body part.
This tool only shows your "ideal" measurements using Steve's formula, they are not always 100% accurate, and are meant only as a guide to good proportions.
Inches? Why inches? Who in the world still uses such an arbitrary and outdated measurement unit..
My results seems weird but I also have to but not the right number since I need to convert

Playing around with it, I think the pelvis measurement is the one that's setting most people off and is making their ideal chest size huge. Most guys carry a lot of weight around there, so your measurement is likely wrong. The wrists, ankles, knees, and skull don't really widen unless you're really obese but the pelvis does unless you're under 15% bodyfat. If I put my pelvis measurement down to what it is when I'm really lean, the chest becomes way more reasonable. Everything is a few inches above me(cause of course it is, I'm not Mr. Universe), but the chest is about the same as everything else instead of a huge outlier.
My pelvis size is 39" so a 58" chest? My bodyfat is near simgle digits so must be all the heavy squats making my pelvis size so big
You people have to remember that these calculations are based off Steve Reeves' peak numbers, which were likely pumped and flexed. Most people are just not genetically gifted with pleasing lines and will never get these kinds of proportions. If you're short and have big ankles and hips, or a big head, you will need ridiculous muscles to get the "ideal" lines of who is widely considered the most pleasing physique in the world. Reeves had a big ribcage and naturally big calves and small hips. Most of you just don't have the genetics to strive for those lines.
It's really important that everyone reading this article/using this tool recognizes that these calculations represent a "BODYBUILDING Ideal." I stand 5ft 10.5" tall, and at 194lbs my stats are as follows - 46" Chest (tape measure underneath my armpits when measuring chest/back); 16.5" neck, 52" -shoulders (tape measure wrapped around my shoulders/arms/chest/back); Arms - 17.25, Thighs 26", waist 34", Calves 16.5."
This tool indicates that I need to have a 31" waistline (which I agree with, as an 'ideal'), but also suggests that I should have a 52" chest, as well as adding 1 or 2 inches to my other muscular measurements. Again, this is a "bodybuilding IDEAL..." certainly, not an Athletic ideal (which is what I am striving to achieve/maintain).
It wont give me a size for legs says NAN. And thats what I really wanted to know. How do I get it ?
Enter the measurements in INCHES or else it shows NAN
Everyone is in denial about there small chest! You have to take into account your lat size. They have way more effect on the chest measurement than your pecs do.

NAN stands for "Not A Number". It's a programming term.
NaN is someone's Grandmother in the UK. It can also mean bread in South Asian food.
But in this case it is when a calculated field returns a value that is "not a number." Probably happens if a number is left out or typed in as a mistake.

I got the measurements. It was as I had expected it to be in some respects. I play football, so my pegs are well delveloped and my arms are like sticks. So, my ideal thigh and calf measurements are pretty close to my real-life measurments. I need to add around 4-5 inches in my arms.
But the thing I found wierd is that, MY CHEST NEEDS TO BE 12 INCHES BIGGER?! (That seems really messed up, because my chest is actually well developed) If my chest becomes that big compared to the other measurments given, I'm going to look like a potato with sticks for arms.
If your measurements are that far off and I don't see a measurement for your shoulders then the measurement that you should be using could be your shoulders which also includes your chest.
Yep including shoulder because I’m 5’6” and everything is on point and my chest is 42” at 160lbs and with shoulders it’s 52” which makes sense
Remember tho.... The chest measurement also includes the lats.
The height measurement does not include my height! I am 5 foot tall and if I were to add 5 inches my calculation would be extremely skewed.
I like this as a quick calc. The calc seems to follow Steve Reeves formula in the book “Building the Classic Physique: The Natural Way”. It's a good way to get an idea of where you should be. The mirror will take you the rest of the way. If you look in the mirror and your chest/back looks too small in proportion to your arms, you know you need to work on getting thicker around your chest/back. Use this as a guide. Be careful to type in your measurements correctly and accurately in inches for best results.

Wow. I am stunned to say that my measurements now are pretty close to what the charts says. I have 15 inch arms where it says I should have 16, 39.5 inch chest where it says I should have a 41, 27.5ish inch waist which is already rediculous and it wants me to have a 24, and 24 inch thighs which is spot on.
with my 5.9 height i would have 73 arms ridicules.
You may have mistype something mate.
According to this, my chest should be 60 inches... I went to the mirror with the tape measure to see what that would be and all I can say is that there must be something very wrong with this calculator...
It said mine is supposed to be 61". For spec brian shaw has a 60" chest. It also said my thighs are supposed to be 26".
Do you know how retarded it would look to put little 26" thighs on brian shaw? Lmfao! This calculator is bogus. My chest is 54" and already too big for my thighs.
when you measure your chest you have to take into account your back size make a huge difference. you may have a large chest but of if you dont have a large back that can make a huge difference
with my 188cm height and other measurement I would have to have 150mm in chest ... ridicules!

insane ..so, at 5'9" 155lbs they say i should have 17in neck 18in biceps 26in thighs 19in calves 53in chest 31in waist smh...my ankles are 10 in, wrist is 7in 15knee 22in head 3in pelvis...closest thing is my waist is 30 otherwise thats nuts i have 14" bi 40ch , 21q 15c

You are 5'6 and weight 185 with 6 inch wrist and ankle? Wtf? And manage to keep a 33 inch waist? You must have a lot of muscle. Seems like you have big quads and chest, maybe a big back too? My shoulders are 49 inches, my arms are (left) 15.5 - 16 (right), my calve are (left) 16 - 16.5 (right), IDK about my chest hard to measure it on my own. My quads are (left) 23.5 to 24 (right). My neck is 15, my wrist is 7 3/4 my ankle is like 10 inches (I have big ankles). My hand in circumference is 10 inches. My hips are 38 inches, my Forearms (left) 13.5 - 14 inches (right), my waist is 34... I underwent depression and gained lots of fat from 208 I'm down to 175 lbs in 3 months right now thanx to longboarding and working out. My stomach is my main goal at the moment considering when I was a 155 lbs my waist was 29 inches with 15.5 inch arms.

Do you measure your chest with or without your arms? In other words would it be chest size or shoulders?
i measured my chest under my arms and had my brother measure the tape for me so there wouldnt be any flexiing involved . so I guess under the arms bro so its more accurate.
No doubt having those wonderful stats and weight would lead to an early death often. Just check the stats in the five long-living areas of the world called Blue Zones and you will learn that even our BMI tables are too high such that at 5 10 the best BMI for me is around 21, not 25.
Foremost, BMI has been demonstrated to be utter tripe. Furthermore, how do you explain Jim Fixx vs Jackie Gleason. Or Charles Durning vs. Charles Bronson---died at 89 & 81 respectively. Moreover, Reeves lived well into his 1980s.
Richard, I think you, and your ilk, are pushing junk science. Yes, there are some very good habits to pick up from the Blue Zone Diet. However, it's not an absolute and the BMI of those regions is as much genetics as diet.
In closing, think before you speak.
I believe BMI was designed by the US Army to look at trends in the population and individual soldiers. Waist to height is a much better indicator.
Anecdotes are useless. I agree that the "Western" body type is large for BMI, but the people who live the longest are those who have for security (not starving) but the lowest BMI. I know there is a proven link, not sure if they've shown causation.
That said, I'm 6'4" 195 w/ 9% bf so fairly scrawny and am bordering on overweight according to BMI...
Tell me about it! I am 6'3", and when I was 220 I was told I needed to lose weight. I was still too slim for my frame. I looked like a basketball player. The maximum weight for my height was 205 according to the height-weight charts, and I was so skinny at that weight if I turned sideways you couldn't see me. Their small, medium, and large frame estimates are way off. I have narrow shoulders and small wrists, but my arms are 30" long and my inseam is 36"! I look anorexic below 200 lbs.
Reeves, if you are talking about Steve, died at 74 of a blood clot after surgery, having recently been diagnosed with lymphoma.

almost correct but chest should be 53" lol mines 47" neck 17" waist 31" thighs 26" arms 18" calves 17" has anyone tried getting clothes to fit them because id like to know all my gear is strechy lol its amazing no-ones got on to this yet
Don't get caught up in this guys and girls, this is not a blueprint of how you should/will look, you can have thin wrists it wont prevent you from gaining muscle and it doesn't matter. All this talk of ecto, meso and endomorph wont limit you to how your body can look.
It show cheast size 53" ,and waist 31" how it is possible. Currently my cheast is 39"
My chest is curently at 45", according to the calculator my ideal is 58" ridicuolous. My waist is 30" but it should be 34" altough i think tha lower the more aestzhatic, so i'M on ther better side :D
I realize this thread goes back a ways, but to address some of the repeated questions, this calculator is based on a book a now dead guy wrote back in like the 1950's. So yeah, it doesn't cater to women, nor to overly tall or short people. Sorry. Blame it on the times.
Its not meant to be the end-all, be-all calculator for ideal physique, its meant to simply take the ideals as presented by a famous 50's body builder, and make them into an online calculator.
